It seems that Bethesda has done it again, taking many man hours from many a gamer and made them once again completely enthralled in a fantasy world of their choosing. Their first big game on the current generation Eldar Scrolls IV: Oblivion had its flaws, but sold well and was critically acclaimed but many in the industry, their two follow up post-apocalyptic games again were highly regarded and sold by the bucket loads, despite their problems, and now Skyrim seems to have built on these and Bethesda have built the game they have wanted to for a while. I never really played any of the previous Bethesda games, I played some Morrowind back in the day, and about 10 hours on Oblivion before I got bored and never liked Fallout 3, but when I found out Skyrim was £22.49 (Probably due to the amount of bugs and glitches that have been reported) I decided to give it a shot. So I went to the store to trade in the infuriating Fifa 12 and bought it, when handing it over the guy serving me said “hope you enjoy your copy of Skyrim, it will take over your life, I know it has mine”. Now, I came away from that with a wry smile thinking “how sad, that’s never actually going to happen” how wrong I was…..barely 3 hours in I was hooked. I had to get the next mission out the way, I wanted to progress that constellation up a bit more, join this group etc, theres seemingly no point to which you can put this game down and not wonder, man if just played for 20 more minutes what I could have done, what I might have seen and slayed. Even though I have a full time job, children at home and a social life, I’m often thinking about what I could do next time I’m playing. Many of my friends are exactly the same, many hours at work are spent talking about our different paths and adventures, and how our experience is unique to ourselves and what we’ve seen that others haven’t. There are talks that there are 300+ hours in this game, now if that is true, it’s sure to keep a lot of people occupied for a very long time, or bide the time until the next DLC comes out for the hard-core gamers. For the meantime I will keep killing dragons and collecting soul gems till the electricity runs out.
