After much deliberation and some moaning about gunshots ricocheting around the room on the main surround sound setup, i decided it was time to invest in some surround sound headphones.
After some research my choices came down to either the Tritton AX Pro's or the Turtle Beach X41's.
Some luck came my way and i was offered the Trittons, so kind of made my mind up for me!
Anyway - onto the headset itself.
The manufacturer specs are show below
(Click on all images for full size):
They come well packaged, in quite an impressive, heavy box. All the info is really useful on the outside if you're into reading boxes instead of tearing them open!
There's an impressive amount of "bits" inside once you open it up, including headset, decoder, PSU, leads, spare ear cups and much more.
On first appearance it seems its a well built set of headphones which look like they'll stand up to a good bashing. The mic is removable which is always useful if you're not chatting regularly. They're a full ear headphone, covering all your lug - and even with glasses they're very comfortable.
The set comes with a decoder box, optical lead for connection to Xbox, various other leads for PC, PS3 etc too.
Connection was simple, and has been MUCH improved from previous older versions of the AX Pro. Only one mains power lead now to the decoder box instead of 2 previously. Wiring to the headset is much simpler too. Great for the less technical minded!
Once connected i fired up both COD:MW3 and BF3 to test them out.
All channels are full adjustable to suit how you fancy hearing the sounds. For example you can set much more rear to really hear footsteps behind you, or remove the sub volume to limit booming of explosions. They have a delay function too to get a real effect of positioning.
This is achieved using the small inline controller as shown below. Some playing about here is required.
Sound quality is top notch. Running in 5.1 it's amazing. Much better than the surround sound setup connected to the TV. But then, they are right on your ears, so you might expect so.
Another improvement over previous models is the feature whereby you can route your own voice through the speakers. It makes chatting so much easier, as you don't shout as much due to the fact you can hear yourself. This is switchable if you require. One downside to this is the fact once on, it routes all sounds the mic picks up through to the speakers, and can limit what you may hear in game. I didn't find it a problem however.
Overall, a fantastic headset offering superb connectivity options to most systems. Only real downside to some people may be to off putting price.
